FEATURED STORY:

Taking Action to Accelerate Growth

By Damian Hermann, Head of School

It was my pleasure to present the State of the School to the Academy of Sacred Heart Community on Tuesday. I hope that I was able to represent all of the hard work that so many are doing to honor and continue the excellence that we presently demonstrate, while urgently conveying the opportunities we have to improve. It is important for me to communicate that continuous improvement is a critical element of my leadership style, and as I said in my presentation, we must collect meaningful data, implement improvement, and reflect, revise and iterate. This ongoing process is at the core of every great school. As we do this, our ability to accelerate growth depends on our ability to empower, develop and retain our own very talented people as well as recruit extraordinary people to our open positions.

I also spent some time evidencing all the ways that we have been and continue to deliver exceptional student outcomes that are grounded in Sacred Heart education. While I had plenty to share, it was done more expertly by All School Representative Meaghan Emmi '19 as well as alumna Kennedi Draper '18. Their self-awareness as they described how Sacred Heart education is forming them as young women, as students, as friends, and as faith-driven people was truly inspirational. Meaghan and Kennedi are unique young women who powerfully exemplify the 200-year-old, proven Sacred Heart approach to forming the whole child.

Very shortly, you will be receiving your re-enrollment contracts, and I urge you to return them quickly. As I shared during the State of the School address, this is one of the ways you can take action in support of our school community - and potentially reap the benefits of early pay discounts. Other ways to help include peer-to-peer recruiting and support of our fundraising efforts (more on The Secret Garden Gala below). I look forward to continuing to build relationships with and among all of you; please feel free to contact my office with any questions that you have about the State of the School presentation.

The Secret Garden Gala

The secret is out! You should have received your invitations for The Secret Garden Gala in the mail. Please note:  the correct URL to purchase tickets is www.ashbenefit.afrogs.org. It is listed incorrectly on the front of the RSVP card, and correctly on the back. We apologize for the confusion! Also, please be sure to list your name when purchasing tickets via the mail so that we can process your reservations without delay.

Hopefully you've heard from your class captains about the theme of the basket your learning community is donating. Each family is being asked to donate a monetary gift or an item to include in the basket. These are always a hit and the kids love feeling included in supporting their school.

Silent Auction donations are needed, such as concert (Queen with Adam Lambert, Ariana Grande, The Who, etc.) and sporting event tickets, overnights at Detroit hotels, Handlebar pedal bar package, chef's table dinners with exclusive wine pairings, etc. If you have an idea, let us know and we can help you put it together.

Looking to get involved? We have a great need for volunteers! Consider helping the week of and day of the event, making baskets and setting up the event.

Magazine ads are due a week from today on February 15! Don't miss this opportunity to support our school!

Please visit www.ashbenefit.afrogs.org to purchase tickets, magazine ads, sponsorships, and donate items. If you have any questions please contact Danielle Bell at dbell@ashmi.org or call/text 248.410.6772.

Last weekend, for the third consecutive year, the Upper School Model United Nations team attended NDMUN III at the University of Notre Dame. The conference is attended by several schools from Chicago; Madison, WI; and Michigan and gives our team valuable exposure in this competitive field.

Our team members - Sofia DeSanto '20, Grace Micale '21, Olivia Morreale '21 and Ellie Wasson '19 -  excelled in speaking skills, research, and writing of position papers. We are very proud of these young ladies!

For the first time, the Upper School will be sending a student, junior Sofia DeSanto (pictured above, left), to the State Competition of Poetry Out Loud. Sofia earned this spot by competing here at school in the memorization, interpretation and presentation of three poems and taking first place. Runner-up in the school competition is Charlotte Carozza.

Sofia will now present in Lansing on March 1 and 2, competing against students from all over Michigan. Congratulations, Sofia and Charlotte, and good luck in Lansing!

Empty Bowls 2019

Image

Plan to begin your Lenten observance at Sacred Heart on Ash Wednesday, March 6 with an "Empty Bowls" meal and a prayer service and distribution of ashes in the Chapel. The Empty Bowls symbolic meal of soup and bread will raise money and awareness in the fight to end hunger.

Two seatings will be offered, 5:30 and 7 p.m., with the prayer service taking place between the seatings at 6:15 p.m. A cash donation of $20 per family ($10 each for additional bowls to take home) is payable at the door, with proceeds benefiting The Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.

Morning Drop-Off

Thank you to our volunteer parents, faculty, staff and maintenance team members for helping to implement our new morning drop-off procedures. We've had some very frigid weather to deal with and we are grateful for their assistance. Also, we welcome any parent volunteers who could assist us, Monday-Friday mornings, between 7:15-7:45 a.m. Please contact Kate Lynch if you are available morning during drop-off.

As you know, this program was implemented to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff as they arrive each morning. We appreciate your understanding and support as everyone in the community becomes more familiar with the program.  As a friendly reminder:

  • Drop-off is only allowed in the designated drop-off zone. This zone begins at the marked barriers (past the crosswalk) and is designated by bright orange flags.
  • Please pull all the way up if the lane is open. Approximately 5-6 cars will fill up the drop-off zone at any given time. Where possible, students should exit on the right-hand side of the vehicle.
  • Vehicles in the drop-off zone must wait for the vehicle in front of them to pull out before leaving their drop-off parking space.
  • If you park, students and visitors must only use the main crosswalk closest to the Field House main doors.
  • In case you haven't seen it, we made a short video to help illustrate this process.
