FEATURED STORY:

Valedictorian and Salutatorians Announced

Image

As stated in the Student Handbook, the selection of the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the graduating class is determined by a number of factors, including full attendance during her junior and senior years. If she is a transfer student, she must bring with her a minimum of a 3.60 Grade Point Average.

The Valedictorian is the student with the highest cumulative GPA, with a minimum of a 3.70. The Salutatorian is the student with the second highest cumulative GPA, with a minimum of a 3.60. In some years, it is possible there may be no Salutatorian.

This year, the Academy of the Sacred Heart is proud to recognize Victoria Shahnazary (above, left) as Valedictorian and her classmates, Kendall Gassman (above, center) and Lauren Pardi (above, right), as Co-Salutatorians. Congratulations to these young women for their many academic achievements and accomplishments throughout the years.

The Valedictory Address will be given at the Commencement Exercises on Thursday, June 14. The Salutatorians' Addresses will be presented at Prize Day on the same morning.

ASH Receives SupportMusic Merit Award

The Academy of the Sacred Heart has been recognized by The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation with a 2018 SupportMusic Merit award as part of the Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) program.

ASH is one of only four schools in Michigan, and 135 nationwide, to receive this award, which recognizes an exceptionally high commitment to music education. Schools are evaluated on funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction.

We congratulate and thank Kim Unrau, the director of music for the Middle School for Girls and the Upper School, who coordinated the school's application, and all the ASH educators who make music a vital component of the curriculum.

Ready ... Set ... Road Rally!

Have a good time and support a great cause! Click here for details about this year's Road Rally and then plan to join in the fun on May 11.

For three hours, teams figure out clues, solve puzzles and drive from place to place in a race to be the first car to arrive at the final destination and win fabulous monetary prizes and possibly the honor of hosting the next year's Rally. Click here for a peek inside this fun tradition, which has benefited the Upper School Performing Arts Department since 2003.

NURSE'S NOTES

Ryan Rocks Annual Blood Drive

The blood drive will be held at Northbrook Presbyterian Church (22055 West 14 Mile Road, Beverly Hills) on Wednesday, May 2 from 1-7 p.m. To schedule an appointment, please go to: www.redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code: northpres

Be sure to bring your photo I.D. You won't be able to donate without your I.D. Also, please arrive a couple minutes prior to your appointment time so that they maintain an on-time schedule. Pre-screening can now be done online.

In preparation for your donation:

  1. Be sure to get a good eight hours of sleep.
  2. Be sure your meals include healthy protein sources, complex carbohydrates and iron-rich foods. Dietary iron intake is really important – low iron can cause your hemoglobin to be low, which will make you ineligible to donate.
  3. Drink plenty of water. Start the day with a glass of water and be sure to drink extra water throughout the day. Drinking water 10-30 minutes prior to your donation will help to prevent dizziness and/or lightheadedness from donating.

If you are nervous about donating or if you haven't donated before:

  • Look away when the needle is inserted and use positive imagery to help you relax.
  • Bring something to read while you are waiting.
  • If you feel discomfort, tell your Red Cross staff member and they can help you.
  • After donating, all donors should plan to take 15 minutes to relax at the "canteen," drink fluids and have a snack before you return to your day's activities.

If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the school nurse, Robin Clements at rclements@ashmi.org or 248-646-8900, ext. 424.

"Retro Toddler"

There has been a lot of discussion lately regarding "screen time" and our children.  A question that is now commonly asked at doctor's appointments is "How much screen time is your child allowed?" We know our teens love video games and their cell phones. But what about our younger children who use iPads and cell phones as entertainment?

The American Academy of Pediatrics has a new book titled Retro Toddler, geared to parents of 12-36 month-olds. The book has over 100 screen-free, electronics-free activities to do with your child. These activities are engaging for children and enhance language, motor, and social skills.
