The Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the students’ participation in becoming life-long learners. Teachers guide the students as they create in order to develop their own independent reading and writing lives.
The Language Arts curriculum for 7th and 8th grades is characterized by the following:
- A focus on strong classroom activity
- Teaching into students’ lives both academically and personally
- Designing lessons based on students’ needs
- Mini-lessons which involve direct teaching on specific skills or strategies
- Independent work time in which students work at an individual pace using strategies taught
- Conferencing between teacher/student, student/student and teacher/group
- Student sharing of their work, tips and areas of need
