Alumnae and Alumni Association

Although the Academy of the Sacred Heart was founded in Detroit in 1851, the Alumnae Association was not organized until 1899. Miss Katherine Flynn, a graduate from the class of 1865, called together a group of former pupils and proposed an organization. The organization was first known as the “Alumnae and Literary Association of the Convent of the Sacred Heart”. After World War I, the Alumnae Association dropped the word “Literary” from its title.

The original preamble of the alumnae constitution states that the graduates and former pupils of the Convent of the Sacred Heart formed their association “for the purpose of keeping in close relations to our Alma Mater, and also of the cultivating, in union, the moral and intellectual improvements, of which the foundation was laid within her walls.”

Today, the Alumnae and Alumni Association focuses on broadening communications, strengthening relationships and promoting participation among more than 1,700 alumnae and alumni from the classes of 1931 through 2014.  Emphasis is also placed on cultivating an association with students in preparation for their involvement after graduation. Our alumni have an exceptional commitment of support to the national (AASH) and the international (AMASC) associations.  A significant effort to collaborate in the mission of St. Madeleine Sophie also extends to supporting the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and the U.S. Provincial Team.  June 2005 signaled the first group graduating from the middle school for boys, now called Kensington Hall, and the addition of these alumni was heralded as a historically important occasion.

The Sacred Heart Alumnae Association has had three members serve on the Associated Alumnae of the Sacred Heart Board (the national board), and past Admissions Director Barbara Brown Lopiccolo’62 is the Vice President of the Worldwide Association of Alumnae and Alumni of the Sacred Heart (AMASC).
