Learning Through Community Service
| “Your actions, much more than your words will serve as an eloquent message to the world.” |
–St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart |
Community Service at the Academy of the Sacred Heart is integral to the life and mission of the school. From the very youngest to the inter-generational "Community in Action" days, members of the ASH community make visible the desire to build a world where equal opportunity is available to all.
Responding to the needs of the world through community service provides a developmental way for students to give from their hearts and ease the burdens of others. From participating in efforts to offer Tsunami relief, to assisting in the building of a Sacred Heart Primary and Secondary School in Kenya, to providing food baskets at Thanksgiving, ASH students perform more than 300 hours of community service weekly.
The Community Service Program becomes most visible in the middle schools and Upper School where time is allotted during instructional day. In the Upper School, students in Grades 10 through 12, along with faculty members and parent volunteers, spend two hours each Thursday serving the educational, nutritional and social needs of children and adults in our neighboring communities. Students spend time reflecting on their experiences, providing social analysis and offering commitment to changing lives through the actions of love.
