The After School Learning Center
"Erasing Boundaries of Difference and Building Bridges of Community"
Since 1988, working with the Lighthouse of Oakland County, a social services agency, the After School Learning Center (ASLC) has operated as a satellite of the Academy of the Sacred Heart, providing academic tutoring, educational and recreational programming for children. Beginning in September 2005, the program was expanded and formalized under a collaborative agreement with the Pontiac Public School District and the Lighthouse of Oakland County. Rooted in collaboration and the belief that change is possible when forces for good and resources are magnetized, this program seeks to build bridges of educational relationship between communities, children and adults.
Located in the newly-constructed Field House at the Academy, participants are transported three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) immediately following school dismissal and return at approximately 6:00 p.m. During program hours, students receive academic tutoring in math, reading, science and computers and enjoy enrichment opportunities in sports, games and performing arts. Staffed by a team of volunteers, the ASLC depends on this dedicated group of adults and young adults to teach, to play and to create bridges of relationship with program participants. Parents of participating children also play an active and visible role to ensure the program's success. The program is funded by private grants.
In addition to the weekly program, the After School Learning Center operates "Super Saturday" programs that offer participants and their families, as well as volunteers and their families, the chance to explore the Metropolitan Area and discover the excitement of learning in action. A two-week summer program also helps to stretch academic growth through the summer months while incorporating the exploration and fun characteristic of the After School Learning Center.
